Whats A Float Switch?

So i was reading a article on air conditioning and maintenance and things you can have done to prevent water leaks in case the drain line backed up, i kept reading the word "float Switch" what is a float switch??

    A float switch is a device that will completely turn off your air conditioning system in the event your air conditioning systems drain backs up. it is wired in series with your systems low voltage. the float switch is installed parallel with your air conditioners drain. see the pic below.

    There are a bunch of different kinds of float switches. They are nicknamed ceiling savers amongst us in the field. They can prevent serious damage to ceilings and floors. I think every unit on the planet should have one, trust me their worth the cost
