How big does my AC need to be?

I have several quotes on my AC system and they are offering a 3 or a 4 ton. My house is 1550 square feet with a normal amount of windows. I would think bigger is better but I'm sure there must be a reason not to go to big or they wouldn't make smaller ones. I don't know anything about this stuff so any insight would be much appreciated.

    There are a few things that come to play when sizing a air conditioning and heating system correctly.
    1. what part of town are you in? If in the Austin area the city of Austin recommends having an AC system sized at 600SF per ton. therefor putting your system at a rough 2.5 Ton, however you mentioned you have "normal widows" and most likely you have older insulation... therefor i would recommend a 3.0 TON. If you were to install a 4.0 ton on a house with only 1550 SF. you may have MOLD/Humidity problems... essentially your duct-work would not be able to handle the load... also you don't want you air conditioning and heating system to short cycle cause higher energy bills...
