My air-conditioning stopped cooling, what can I do?

A lot of air conditioning problems are caused by dirt. A dirty outside coil can cause the head pressure to go high, and on a hot day, the Freon can burst a hole in the system, cause the compressor to fail, and result in an electrical breaker to trip then fail.

Indoor coils are another story. A dirty indoor coil can cause the coil to ice over and reduce the flow of air. When this happens, the ice gets thicker and the air eventually stops completely. The major cause of dirty coils indoors dirty filters. Clean an indoor coil is a dirty, time-consuming job. I have heard of cleaning jobs that cost more than the labor for new installation of equipment.

Even for the most diligent customer, the coils will occasionally need cleaning. In my home, for example, the coils were dirty after 15 years and we cleaned them - on inspection seven years later, they were still clean. The system is now 33 years old and I should probably examine the coils again, even though I am careful to change the filters on a regular schedule.
