Get Your Heating System Tuned Up TODAY!!

Brrrrrrr, Austin! It’s chilly out! With this cold front rolling through, I’m sure a lot of you have probably thought about turning on your furnaces. Here’s the big question when it comes to that: When was the last time you had a maintenance done on your furnace?

It’s very important to have your furnace and air conditioning units maintained annually to ensure that they run properly all year round. Precision Heating and Air Conditioning offers an annual preventative maintenance plan for only $129 a year to make sure both of your units run smoothly, checking your air conditioning in the spring and heating unit in the fall. That’s at least $10 less than the local competition and our plan comes with a free pound of refrigerant! That’s up to a $139 value, and few of the competitors offer that with their maintenance package.

Already tried to turn on that furnace, and it’s just not warming up your house properly? Fear not! This cold front isn’t sticking around too long, with temperatures popping back up into the 70’s on Wednesday. That will give you time to give Precision Heating & Air Conditioning a call. We can come out and get that heating repair done and drive the chill out of your home before it can get back in. At Precision Heating and Air Conditioning, we deliver service you can trust 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no additional costs for after-hours work. Stay toasty, Austin!

Dose Precision Heating & Air Recommend Having Your Air Ducts Cleaned? Read On...

Hey there, Austin! It’s seems to have warmed up a bit from that cold front that rolled through last weekend, so hopefully you didn't have to kick on that furnace just yet. With the threat of cooler weather, we've had quite a few customers call in asking about getting their ducts cleaned. Does Precision Heating and Air recommend it? Why should I get my ducts cleaned? What are the health and efficiency benefits? Well we can definitely answer all of your questions for you!

There is very little known about the benefits of cleaning the ducts in your house, so a general consensus statement cannot be made for whether you should or shouldn't do this. Knowledge on the potential benefits and problems caused by cleaning ducts is very limited and it is impossible to generalize whether or not duct cleaning would benefit the air quality in your home.

There are only a few reasons that you should get your ducts cleaned:

  • There is substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface (e.g., sheet metal) ducts or on other components of your heating and cooling system.
  • Ducts are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.
  • The ducts are infested with vermin (i.e. insects or rodents).

If you decide to have your ducts cleaned, it should only be as needed, rather than an annual thing. You may consider having your air ducts cleaned simply because it seems logical that air ducts will get dirty over time and should occasionally be cleaned. While the debate about the value of periodic duct cleaning continues, no evidence suggests that such cleaning would be detrimental, provided that it is done properly.

On the other hand, if a service provider fails to follow proper duct cleaning procedures, duct cleaning can cause indoor air problems. For example, an inadequate vacuum collection system can release more dust, dirt, and other contaminants than if you had left the ducts alone. A careless or inadequately trained service provider can damage your ducts or heating and cooling system, possibly increasing your heating and Air Conditioning Repair costs or forcing you to undertake difficult and costly Air Conditioning Repairs or replacements.

While having your heating and air conditioning unit maintained annually can improve efficiency, there is no proof that having your air ducts cleaned will improve your systems efficiency. Moreover, there is no proof of the health benefits of having your air ducts cleaned. If there is a persistent presence of mold or pests, you may want to get the ducts replaced.

If a mold problem persists, you may want to look into having a Guardian Air Reme air purifying system installed. This system not only purifies the air in your home, but stops germs and mold in it track as it enters the home. Interested? Give Precision Heating and Air a call! We provide free quotes on duct replacements and offer installation of Guardian Air purification systems. At Precision Heating and Air, we deliver service you can trust 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no additional costs for after-hours work. Stay cool, Austin!

What's Better? A Heat-Pump Or (LP) Gas Furnace

Looking for an efficient way to heat your home and save yourself some money?

Hey, Austin! Need a new heating unit and not sure if you should try to find a more cost effective way to heat your home? Have you ever looked into a heat pump? Due to the mild weather in Texas, heat pumps can be ideal for heating and cooling a home, and can also save you a lot more money than even a high efficiency LP gas furnace can.

What is the difference?

The fundamental difference between the two is the way that heat is generated. A LP gas furnace heats and blows warm air while a heat pump uses a special refrigerant to take existing heat and move it around – from inside to outside during the summer to provide cooling, and from outside to inside in the winter to provide heating. Heat pumps generally do well in climates that have very mild winters, such as Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico.

Efficiency

Heat pumps can be up to 40% more efficient than gas furnaces, saving you a lot of money on your electric bill in the winter.  Because heat pumps move air around, the can provide four times more energy than they consume.  The efficiency decreases greatly when you live somewhere where the temperatures vary greatly between the winter and summer. If you live somewhere with very cold winters, the heat pump will struggle to draw heat from the outside air, making it harder to move warm air about the house and keep you warm and less efficient.

Cost

There are several price factors you should take into consideration when deciding between heat pump and gas furnace. The first is the difference in electricity prices and propane gas prices in your area. The second is the cost of the units themselves. Depending on the climate in which you live, a heat pump can provide your home with year-round heating and cooling. Heat pumps, despite their name, also serve to cool your home in the summer or warmer months. This eliminates the need for an entirely separate air conditioning system If you choose to go with the gas furnace, you will need an air conditioning unit to keep your house cool during the warmer months. This can mean the difference between buying one unit (the heat pump) or buying two large appliances (the gas furnace and the air conditioner).

Safety

While using a heat pump doesn't generally run any extra risks in your home, there is always some kind of risk with a gas furnace. A furnace requires a continuous gas flow of the gas through a pilot light, running the risk of possible combustion and emission of carbon monoxide if the furnace is not maintained properly.

Looking to replace that unit or increase energy efficiency in your home? Have more questions? Need to have that gas furnace looked at and serviced? Don’t hesitate to call Precision Heating & Air. We deliver service you can trust 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no additional costs for after-hours work. Stay cool, Austin!

Make Sure Your Your Furnace Is SAFE And Free Of Carbon Monoxide!

Hey, Austin! Staying cool during the day and cozy warm at night? If so, keep it up. It looks like this mild weather is here to stay. As the autumn season rolls in and the temperature progressively gets cooler, you should consider getting your furnace checked out. “But it works without a problem every year!” you say. Just that little burning smell in the vents the first few times you kick it on and then your house becomes a nice, cozy, warm place. What you should be worried about, is what you can’t smell!!

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, tasteless toxic gas produced by incomplete combustion in fuel-burning devices such as motor vehicles, gas-powered furnaces, and portable generators. There are many symptoms to carbon monoxide poisoning depending on the amount and length of the exposure. Once carbon monoxide has been breathed in, it replaces the oxygen in the blood, thus killing off cells and starving vital organs of oxygen. There are many symptoms to carbon monoxide poisoning depending on the amount and length of the exposure.

Symptoms

On the low side you can experience headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, and nausea. These symptoms are generally ignored or shrugged off as non-issues because they are the symptoms to other illness as well. On the low end with long exposure, you can also experience brain damage, heart problems, major organ dysfunction, memory or cognitive problems, behavioral and personality changes and a range of other permanent problems.

On the high side of exposure to carbon monoxide, symptoms escalate and become lethal. As the time of exposure or the amount taken in increases, symptoms range from vomiting, mental confusion, seizures, loss muscle coordination, coma, and ultimately will lead to death. About 170 people die yearly in the US due to carbon monoxide exposure, with another 330 people being affected by it in a non-lethal manner.

Prevention

Having your furnace serviced before the cold season sets in is the best way to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning and exposure. Having a carbon monoxide detector in your home is another great way for exposure prevention.  Never, ever ignore your CO alarm if it goes off. It is alerting you to CO in your home, even if it’s not a lethal amount. Exit your home immediately, and call emergency authorities.

Once the source of the carbon monoxide has been identified, make sure to have it service properly. If it turns out to be your furnace, give Precision Heating and Air a call. We deliver service you can trust 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no additional costs for after-hours work. Stay cool, Austin!

The Nights Are Getting Cooler!

Hey, Austin! The nights are slowly getting a little cooler, but it’s not quite cool enough to turn on that heater just yet. Here are some great tips that you can use to keep your home warm in the chilly seasons and save yourself a little money.

  • Go around your home and make sure all of your windows are properly shut and sealed. Using a lit incense stick will show you if there is a draft coming from any of the windows. When the temperature really starts to drop, an easy way to keep the heat in and the cold out is to seal over your windows with sheets of plastic.  After that is done, try putting up a heavy set of curtains. These can block out the draft and keep warm air from escaping. Make sure to open the curtains of your east and west facing windows during the day so that your home can use the warmth from the sun to assist in heating the home.
  • Make sure the space around your doors is properly sealed as well. Buying a draft blocker and placing weather stripping on your door will help keep the heat it. Want to do it on the cheap? Stuff a towel at the bottom of your door instead.
  • Have a guest room or any extra bathroom you don’t use? How about that furnished rec room in the basement? Close off any rooms that aren't being used. This puts another barrier up between you and the cold, and also stops heat circulation to that room.  You can also go to your local hardware store and buy magnetic vent covers. These stick to and cover the vents, stopping air flow into the room.
  • Put on that favorite pair of pajama pants! Dressing warmly while you’re home will keep you from using extra energy to heat your home. Throw on a pair of socks, a hoodie, or even a knit cap to keep your body temperature up.
  • Last, but certainly not least, got that loved one nearby? Cuddle!  One of the greatest sources of heat is your significant other. This gives you the opportunity to bond, cozy up, and be closest to the one you love.

With these simple tips, you can save money on your energy bill every month. Still want to crank up the heat and stay cozy warm? Give Precision Heating and Air a call before you do. We offer Heat Check Maintenance calls for only $89! With our 26 point inspection we’ll make sure that your furnace meets safety standards and will keep your family nice and warm all season. Need some repairs done to your furnace? Don’t hesitate to call Precision Heating and Air. We deliver service you can trust 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no additional costs for after-hours work. Stay cool, Austin!

We Are Scheduling Heating Checks!

It looks like autumn is beginning to really set in with temperatures remaining in the mid-to-low 80’s for at least the next two weeks.

You know what that means? It’s almost time for your yearly heat check. Here at Precision Heating and Air, we offer an incomparable 26 point heat check for only $89.00! Getting an annual heat check on your furnace not only insures that you stay nice, cozy and warm all winter, but it can also save you up to 30% on your energy costs monthly. Staying warm and saving money? That’s quite a deal.

When we send out a Precision Heating and Air service technician to check out your furnace, they look carefully over all of the different parts and pieces, making sure that everything is running properly and efficiently.

Our technicians check the following 26 points to make sure you stay warm and safe all winter:

1. Clean and Check Gas Burners
•  To ensure smooth ignition, burner flames are observed for proper height, color, and alignment of burning
2. Clean and Check Pilot and Pilot Tube
•  The pilot flame needs to be checked to make sure that it is not abnormally large or small. If too large, it wastes gas and makes the system dirty. Too small, and it can affect the system start-up, causing a no-heat condition.
3. Check Flame Baffle (or Ribbons)
•  The flame baffle or ribbon spreads flame evenly across the entire heat exchanger length. If misaligned, plugged with rust and dirt, or cracked, it improperly spreads flame, creating hot spots in the heat exchanger, which can cause sooting, or even cracks in the metal. It also takes longer to heat the home, because it takes longer to heat up the furnace.
4. Set Manifold Gas Pressure
•  Proper pressure is required to control fuel input to the furnace burners. If too low, the safety equipment does not operate properly, and it also takes too long to heat the home. If too high, it can damage the equipment.
5. Check Gas Input
•  The Gas Utility Company attempts to regulate the pressure of gas coming into the gas valve, but pressures fluctuate and the level needs to be checked periodically.
6. Set Burner Air Adjustment
•  It is important to precisely mix air and natural gas before igniting it. If the mixture is too heavy, it creates a poor burning situation and could create carbon monoxide.
7. Check Fan Control
•  Through normal usage, the fan control can get out of mechanical adjustment by as much as 30 degrees. Check to assure that the fan comes on and goes off at predetermined temperatures in order to deliver the proper temperature of air into the home.
8. Inspect Gas Valve and Piping
•  Check the gas valve and piping for visual signs of corrosion and leaks. Listen for abnormal noises such as chattering and gas flow restriction. Also check for the odor of leaking gas.
9. Check Pilot Safety/Thermocouple/ Spark Ignition
•  This safety device senses the loss of pilot flame and shuts down the main burners so that natural gas is not coming into the home without some way of igniting it properly.
10. Inspect Combustion Chamber
•  To assure proper fuel combustion and avoid the possibility of creating carbon monoxide in the house, check for signs of sooting, cracks, and deformity within the combustion chamber.
11. Check Temperature Rise
•  By checking the actual degrees of temperature rise throughout your system, technician can determine if the furnace is heating the home like it is supposed to be heated. If the temperature rise is too high, it causes the furnace to bump the high-limit switch of the furnace, and can stress the heat exchanger. If too low, condensation could form rust in the furnace.
12. Check Blower Motor (Belt and wires, if applicable)
•  Proper maintenance, adjustment, alignment, and cleanliness of the blower and components are necessary for adequate airflow.
13. Lubricate Blower and Bearings (If possible - some are permanently lubricated)
•  Lubrication of the blower in the furnace reduces friction. Thus, the blower will operate both more quietly and inexpensively. It will also extend the blower's life by keeping it running cooler.
14. Check Wiring Assembly
•  Loose connections cause improper voltage to various components, making them either inoperative or causing eventual failure.
15. Check Air Filtration System
•  There are many kinds of air filters used on heating systems: electronic, replacement media, electrostatic, and the common hardware store disposable filter. A dirty filter can reduce the airflow over the heat exchangers resulting in inadequate heating of the home, or it may shorten the life of furnace components. Dirty air filters are a major cause of increased utility bills, and expensive furnace repairs.
16. Check Equipment and Ventilation Space
•  Furnace location should be visual checked to ensure clearance for servicing and clearance from combustible materials. The furnace closet or area should not be used for storage.
17. Check Flue and Venting
•  Necessary to assure proper fuel draft and also to identify flue obstructions. This condition could cause dangerous Carbon Monoxide to leak back into the home, presenting a health risk to the occupants.
18. Check Limit Control
•  The principal control in the furnace to prevent overheating and possible damage to the unit and the structure it's located in. Failed limit controls can cause house fires.
19. Check Heat Anticipator
•  Located in the thermostat, the heat anticipator ensures that the furnace will perform proper cycling on and off during the normal heating day.
20. Check Thermostat Contacts
•  An improperly working thermostat will call for more or less heating than desired. The former will waste energy and money, and the latter will cause discomfort
21. Check Voltage and Amperage on Motors
•  Improper voltage and amperage can significantly reduce the life of the blower, and inducer motors.
22. Check Safety Interlock Switch (where provided by code)
•  Essential for proper protection of anyone opening the bottom panel of the furnace.
23. Perform Carbon Monoxide Test
•  Carbon Monoxide, though potentially very hazardous to your health, is tasteless, colorless, and odorless. Homeowners are usually not aware that Carbon Monoxide is present in their homes until this test is performed.
24. Duct Inspection
•  Dirt buildup in the heating and cooling ductwork limits air movement and can severely choke the system. Most secondary heat exchangers have only 1/16" of air clearance, and can easily become plugged with dirt. Dirty air conditioning coils drastically affect the efficiency of the cooling system and shorten system life.
25. Make Final Operation Check
•  Check all of work to make certain that everything is working just the way it should.
26. Advise Customer of Results of Check
•  It is important to advise owner of the current condition of the heating and cooling system.

With these 26 points Precision Heating and Air can insure that you will have a safe and warm winter season keeping your family safe from dangers such as carbon monoxide and gas leaks, and making sure that your furnace will properly heat your home throughout those chilly months.
Looking for an even better deal? Sign up for out Preventative Maintenance Plan for only $129 ($99 for each additional system)! This plan comes with our 15 point cooling check in the spring and our 26 point heating check in the fall. It also comes with a free pound of refrigerant at each check, which can be a savings anywhere from $89.00-$139.00 per maintenance visit!
