Failed Capacitor- A Common Problem in the Summer Heat!

Capacitor failures are very common in the summertime. Depending on the design of your air conditioner you could have one or multiple capacitors. Capacitors are devices used in HVAC equipment to assist compressors and motors with starting and running effectively. Your air conditioning system has an 'outside fan motor run capacitor' which helps start and run the outside fan that blows air through the outside coils. It also has an 'indoor blower motor run capacitor' which does exactly what you would think, runs the indoor blower motor.

A bad capacitor can go unnoticed for a long time as they usually decline in strength over time or either go out completely. There are a few symptoms of a bad capacitor that will be present. These include: the motor affiliated with it stops running completely, the air conditioner will not blow cool air, a loud and unusual humming sound will be present, and if the indoor fan stops then there will be no air blowing through the vents at all. A failing capacitor can also make the other components of the A/C system work harder which will use more electricity and eat up the money in your bank account!

At Precision Heating and Air we offer licensed and qualified technicians who will come and keep your house cool and comfortable during the hot summer months! We also offer after hours emergency services with no additional costs. So if you find your A/C has died at 6PM on a Sunday night, do not hesitate to contact us as our mission is to keep your family cool and happy!

Air Conditioner on the fritz?

A few guidelines to purchasing your new unit:

When choosing your new air conditioner there are several factors you should consider before
your purchase. Your new unit ideally should be appropriate to your home size, energy efficient,
and also be affordable.

Size:

It is important to find a system that will adequately cool your home without burning out
the unit. Purchasing a unit that is too small will save you money upfront but will prove costly
in the long run. A small unit trying to cool a large area will cause the system to work harder
which will wear down the components more quickly. It will also raise your electric bill since
it will use excessive amounts of energy by running for a longer period than necessary.

Efficiency:

With the price of energy soaring, now is a good time to replace old units that are
costing you extra each month. Replacing your old unit with a more efficient one can cut your
energy bill by 30-45%. This will also help reduce the impact your household has on the
environment. Air conditioning units have a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) that helps
you understand how efficient the system is. The higher the number, the better and more efficient
the unit is. The efficiency rating you choose will have a major effect on your air conditioning
price and bill, both initially and in the long run.

Price:

There is hardly ever a flat rate for an A/C installation, so having a technician come
out to take a look at your needs is recommended. A new unit can run anywhere from $3500-$7000
depending on a variety of factors. These include the size of your home, number of occupants,
work that needs to be done (example: duct-work), and the efficiency of the model you choose.

At Precision Heating & Air our trained technicians will provide you will custom quotes to install
several different units and help you choose one based on your cooling needs. We offer service
you can trust 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no additional costs for after-hours work.
Stay cool Austin!

How To Adjust Your Air Conditioning And Heating Air Flow...

Too much airflow making your house feel more like a wind tunnel?

Running through the walls and ceiling of your home is the duct system that controls the where the air flows to from your central heating and cooling system. If your ducts have been improperly sized, or a room has too many air vents, you may experience heavy air flow in one room and not nearly enough in another. Have a room that gets too hot or too cold? That may be the room with the vent that is closest to the air handler.

How Do I Fix This Problem?

Before you learn how to fix it, you should know how not to fix it. The answer to too much air flow in your home is not simply closing the vents to that room. When you close vent to the room that has too much air flow, the air flows down that channel to where the closed vent it and just sits there. This drops the efficiency of your heating and air conditioning system and raises your energy bill. The air has nowhere to go and will not be directed so it just sits in the duct, slowly becoming room temperature.

What you can do is have a damper installed at the mouth of that particular duct run. A damper is a plate or valve that controls air flow and temperature simply by stopping air flow in the particular area of duct work. Rather than stopping the air once it gets the vents, the damper is placed at the mouth of the duct run, where it can be closed and redirect the air further on down the main duct system.

There are two different types of dampers: manual and automatic. Manual dampers are operated by handle on the outside of the duct that allows you to open or close it when you need to. This would most commonly be used for ducts that lead to guest rooms that aren't constantly in use. No sense in heating or cooling a room that isn't being used, right?

The automatic dampers  are generally included in more sophisticated heating and air conditioning systems such as the Carrier® Infinity® heating and cooling system and the Carrier® Infinity® Touch thermostat .The automatic damper runs on electric or pneumatic motors which are in turn controlled by the thermostat. These dampers are used for zone or room-by-room control so that you can control the temperature of any given zone or room in your home.

Is your office a little too cool, while your bedroom is sweltering hot? Maybe it’s time to give yourself some control over the temperature in your home! Give Precision Heating & Air Conditioning a call! We offer free quotes for system replacements, and our Comfort Consultants will be sure to give you a quote that fits your budget. Hey there, Austin! Are you dreaming of a white Christmas?

Well, as far as Mother Nature is concerned you can forget about it, at least for now! We are rolling into the first weekend of December with an anticipated high of 86 degrees! I know I might hit up Barton Spring’s pool for a good ole polar bear” swim. It doesn't look this warm front is going anywhere too quickly either.  According to the weather forecast we will be holding onto temperatures in the low to mid 80’s until late next week, where we will see temperatures in the high 60’s over the second weekend of December. Looks like you can hold off on turning on those furnaces for yet another week.

When it does get chilly enough that you need your furnace on though, make sure to have your furnace checked out and turned-up before turning it on. Having annual preventative maintenance done on your furnace will make sure you’re not in any danger of a gas leak or carbon monoxide poisoning. Precision Heating & Air offers a coupon for a 26 point heat inspection for just $59! With that kind of savings, why wouldn't you have your furnace looked at? If you’re ready to ensure your family’s safety and save some money this holiday season, call Precision Heating & Air Conditioning.  When you choose Precision Heating & Air Conditioning for your air conditioning and heating service and repair, you choose service you can trust 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no additional costs for after-hours work. Air Conditioning And Heating "SEER" Ratings Explained

What Does SEER Mean?

Good day, Austin! So that old system has finally kicked the bucket, and it’s time to pick a new one. Which one is the best? What’s most efficient?  There are a few factors that play into what determines an air conditioning unit’s efficiency. What’s the SEER rating? Or the AFUE? If you’re getting a heat pump, what’s the HSPF rating? The better question is: What do these terms means and what do they mean to you?

  • SEER

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It is a number that rates the efficiency of your air conditioner or heat pump according to procedures established by the Department of Energy.  In simple terms, it is the BTU capacity of your system divided by the power consumption in WATTS.  Thus, the higher the SEER rating, the more efficient a unit is and the less it will cost to operate.  Most fifteen to twenty year old units are in the 6.00 SEER range.  Replacing a 6.00 SEER unit with a 12.00 SEER unit would result in a 50 % reduction in cooling costs.

In the city of Austin, rebates start at air conditioning units rated at 15 SEER receiving a $400 rebate, 16 SEER receive $450, and 17 SEER and up receive a $550 rebate.

  • AFUE

AFUE stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency.  It is a rating established by the Department of Energy to measure the efficiency of a gas furnace over the course of a heating season.  Most furnaces over ten years old are in the 55 to 65 % AFUE efficiency range.

Since 1992, 80 % AFUE has been the minimum level efficiency that manufacturers are allowed to produce.  The highest AFUE rating currently available is around 92%.  The higher the AFUE, the less gas the furnace consumes.  Higher AFUE furnaces will pay for their added cost in a few years of operation.

Effective May 1st, 2013 non-weatherized residential furnaces and mobile home gas furnaces installed on or after May 1, 2013, in the Northern Region must be at least 90% AFUE. In all other states, non-weatherized gas furnace and mobile home furnaces installed on or after May 1, 2013 would be 80% AFUE.

  • HSPF

HSPF stands for Heating Seasonal Performance Factor.  It is a Department of Energy rating that measures the heating efficiency of a heat pump over the course of a heating season.  The higher the HSPF, the more efficiently the heat pump provides heat.  There is no direct correlation between HSPF and AFUE.

In the city of Austin, Heat pumps receive $400 rebate for 15 SEER, $500 rebate for 16 SEER, and $600 for 17 SEER and up.

Still scratching your head? No worries, our certified technicians at Precision Heating & Air will be happy to explain it, and make sure your house gets the heating and cooling it needs to keep you happy! Ready to replace that old heating and air conditioning unit? Give Precision Heating & Air Conditioning a call!  When you choose Precision Heating & Air Conditioning for your air conditioning and heating service and repair, you choose service you can trust 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no additional costs for after-hours work. Dose Precision Heating & Air Recommend Having Your Air Ducts Cleaned? Read On...

Hey there, Austin! It’s seems to have warmed up a bit from that cold front that rolled through last weekend, so hopefully you didn't have to kick on that furnace just yet. With the threat of cooler weather, we've had quite a few customers call in asking about getting their ducts cleaned. Does Precision Heating and Air recommend it? Why should I get my ducts cleaned? What are the health and efficiency benefits? Well we can definitely answer all of your questions for you!

There is very little known about the benefits of cleaning the ducts in your house, so a general consensus statement cannot be made for whether you should or shouldn't do this. Knowledge on the potential benefits and problems caused by cleaning ducts is very limited and it is impossible to generalize whether or not duct cleaning would benefit the air quality in your home.

There are only a few reasons that you should get your ducts cleaned:

  • There is substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface (e.g., sheet metal) ducts or on other components of your heating and cooling system.
  • Ducts are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.
  • The ducts are infested with vermin (i.e. insects or rodents).

If you decide to have your ducts cleaned, it should only be as needed, rather than an annual thing. You may consider having your air ducts cleaned simply because it seems logical that air ducts will get dirty over time and should occasionally be cleaned. While the debate about the value of periodic duct cleaning continues, no evidence suggests that such cleaning would be detrimental, provided that it is done properly.

On the other hand, if a service provider fails to follow proper duct cleaning procedures, duct cleaning can cause indoor air problems. For example, an inadequate vacuum collection system can release more dust, dirt, and other contaminants than if you had left the ducts alone. A careless or inadequately trained service provider can damage your ducts or heating and cooling system, possibly increasing your heating and Air Conditioning Repair costs or forcing you to undertake difficult and costly Air Conditioning Repairs or replacements.

While having your heating and air conditioning unit maintained annually can improve efficiency, there is no proof that having your air ducts cleaned will improve your systems efficiency. Moreover, there is no proof of the health benefits of having your air ducts cleaned. If there is a persistent presence of mold or pests, you may want to get the ducts replaced.

If a mold problem persists, you may want to look into having a Guardian Air Reme air purifying system installed. This system not only purifies the air in your home, but stops germs and mold in it track as it enters the home. Interested? Give Precision Heating and Air a call! We provide free quotes on duct replacements and offer installation of Guardian Air purification systems. At Precision Heating and Air, we deliver service you can trust 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no additional costs for after-hours work. Stay cool, Austin!

What Are The Most Common NO COOL CALLS?

Hey, Austin! During the warm months (in Texas thats April-October) Precision Heating & Air sees a variety of issues with customers central air conditioning units and we get a lot of different explanations for what the customer thinks is wrong. But what are the most common problems we face when going out to fix a customers air conditioning unit? I'm glad you asked.

5. Faulty Wiring
Improper, haphazard or uncertified A/C wiring is dangerous and a potential fire hazard. We often will come across installs or repairs that the customer tried to complete themselves, or hired a free-lance contractor, to complete. We do not advise this! You always want to have a certified NATE HVAC technician come out to service your air conditioning unit. Bad wiring often prevents the system from getting power, or can trip the circuit breaker.

4. Low Refrigerant
Refrigerant (also known as R-22 Freon or R-410A Puron) is the chemical that cools the air. Low refrigerant may indicate a leak or problem with the refrigerant system. If your air conditioning system needs to be recharged with refrigerant, typically that means there is a leak. All refrigerant leaks should be located and repaired. A low refrigerant or a leak can lead to the evaporator coil freezing up, which will take hours to thaw before a certified technician can work on your air conditioning unit.

3. Condenser Fan is not Working
Another common issue we run into is the condenser fan motor going bad. The condenser fan is responsible for transferring the heat from your home to the outside air. If the fan on the outside unit doesnít run, proper heat transfer is not taking place and the air conditioning compressor may overheat and trip the safety overload. Worse yet, it may cause internal damage to the compressor.

2. Condenser Unit is not Functional
This typically indicates lack of power, contactor problems or even a faulty thermostat.

1. Frozen Evaporator Coil
A frozen evaporator coil often indicates a problem with the airflow, such as restrictions caused by dirty air filters or blocked return air ductwork. Make sure to change your filters often. Not sure how often that should be? You can find all that out here. (Insert link to blog about air filters) Frozen indoor coils could also be caused by low refrigerant, but that can only be determined by having a certified technician come out and search for a leak and test the refrigerant levels.

So there you have it, Austin. The top five reasons things go wrong with your air conditioner. The only one that you really can fix yourself is when the evaporator coil freezes. Try changing your filters and leaving the unit off for 3-4 hours to let it thaw. If your house doesn't start cooling down after that, it's time to call in the pros! Never hesitate to call Precision Heating & Air. We deliver service you can trust 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no additional costs for after-hours work. Stay cool, Austin!

Time To Save On Those Energy Bills!

Hey there, Austin! The rest of this week looks to be in the mid-80’s to low 90’s. That’s practically winter here in Austin! Looking for an easy way to cut down on your electric bill and stay cool?  Open some windows! When the weather begins to cool down, your air conditioner dose not have to work  has hard to keep the house cool. Turn your air conditioning unit up into the 80’s or just turning it off completely, you give your system a break and save a little money.

Along with opening windows, using your ceiling fan will help keep you cool. A 1mph breeze can make you feel 3-4 degrees cooler, and we all know we use our ceiling fans at a much faster rate. Did you know that your ceiling fan has two settings? One to pull air up during the winter and the other to blow air down in the heat, so make sure your fan is moving in the right direction.

As autumn rolls into Texas, be sure to be mindful of the outside temperature. Your air conditioning unit should not be run when the outside temperature is 65 degrees fahrenheit or lower. Running it at these temperatures can cause your evaporator coil freeze up, making your air conditioning unit malfunction.
Easy, right? Paying attention to the temperature outside can help you keep the inside of your house nice and cool, and help you save a little money. If the temperature does spike (because we live in Texas and therefore cannot really predict the weather), turn your air conditioner down to a comfy 76-78 degrees to cool the house down. If you air conditioning unit decides to not cool you down at all, feel free to call Precision Heating and Air. We deliver service you can trust 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no additional costs for after-hours work. Stay cool, Austin!

Wow, Texas Weather Is Strange!

So we have been blessed with a “cool front” in mid-July! How strange is that? Not just two weeks ago it was so hot none of us could stand it; ya know the normal Texas weather at this time of year! We do need a little reprieve from the exhausting temperatures we had last summer and maybe even some rain. How nice would that be to have! There is a 30-40% chance of rain next week so maybe if we are lucky, we will get some well needed rain to help the drought and the temperatures. Looks like it’s going to be in the low 90’s next week and in the evenings in the mid 70’s so it’s going to be a nice few days.

Get Your Air Conditioner Tuned, Before The August Heat!

Right now is the best time to give us a call, make sure the maintenance has been done on your air-conditioning system. WOW IT'S BEEN HOT!!

It has been so hot this last week, as a matter of fact it’s been record breaking temperatures and I know we have all been feeling it. I wanted to start out by thanking our loyal, valuable and awesome customers. Not just the ones we have established but also the new ones we have gained just this week alone. Thank you for not only using Precision Heating and Air Conditioning but also thank you all for all of your patience as you had to sit in your homes awaiting our technicians arrival to get your air conditioner back up and working and your home back to being comfortable.  So Thank You All!

Make Sure Your Ceiling Fans Are Turning The Correct Way For The Season

Clockwise or counter clockwise, this is the question of the day. As I have mentioned in my previous blogs, using ceiling fans will help keep your energy will down and help cool you off. So I thought I would make sure everyone is aware what way your fans should turn in the summer and in the winter. Its counter clockwise in the hot weather. When you’re looking up at your ceiling, it should turn counter clockwise. You should feel it blow air down at you to cool you using wind chill. Start the fan at a low speed and make it go faster as the temperature rises in your home. A good rule of thumb is if its 78 degrees in the home it should be set at a slow speed, around 80 degrees it should be at a medium speed and about 82 degrees or higher should be on a fast speed. When you have your air conditioner running, push the temperature up about two degrees when the ceiling fan is on. Always turn the fan off if no one is in the room so that you aren't wasting electricity.

Don't Hesitate To Contact Us!

Clockwise in cold weather, running the fan clockwise to stir up the air, it should lift the air, letting it slowly spread and go down the walls of the room. Use the lowest setting so no one feels a draft. You can let it run as long as people are in the house, remember saving money is the name of the game even in winter so turn the fans off and the thermostat down when you are not home. Always remember we are here to assist you with all you’re cooling and heating needs here at Precision Heating and Air Conditioning!

Precision Heating & Air IS A Carrier Factory Authorized Carrier Dealer!

What a great weekend with my family. I hope everyone had a nice father’s day weekend. I was thinking this weekend about what an “Authorized Dealer” means. Well an Authorized Dealer has a direct relationship with the manufacturer. The Authorized Dealer has access to the newest products and all the best promotions among other things. It also means that because we have a direct relationship with the dealer we get the best training and training materials. Which means helpful service on the phone, intelligent and informative technicians and all around professionalism? Products from Authorized Dealers are brand new in a factory sealed box that is shipped directly from the vendor to the dealer. Checking the manufacturer’s site is a good first step in making sure that you are dealing with an Authorized dealer. If the dealer is listed there then you can have that warm fuzzy feeling that you get from shopping with and Authorized Dealer. If not, you might check to see if a phone number for verification is available. Beyond that though, it becomes a little harder to verify. A couple suggestions, do they have a good rating on Consumer ratings site? Have you heard of them before? Do they have a physical store? These are a couple things you can use to judge the validity of a retailer. Here at Precision Heating and Air we will guarantee to you that we are Fully Authorized Carrier Dealers. Please feel free to visit our web site, come into our store or check out our ratings on Google.

Lower Your Energy Bills With Precision Heating & Air's "PM" Plans

Summer time comfort and lower cooling bills are on the top of everyone’s list here in Austin where the temperatures are already in the mid to upper 90’s. Keeping your air conditioner maintenance is a big part of staying comfortable in your home and in your finances. We offer many services here at Precision Heating and Air Conditioning that can help keep repairs to your air conditioner at a minimum.  The manufacturer of your air conditioning system recommends that you service your AC System twice a year. Here at Precision Heating and Air Conditioning we offer one time checks or maintenance contracts that insure we will be out twice a year, once in the summer and we do a 15 point inspection and once in the winter and we do a 26 point inspection. It’s one of those things you just do, like changing the oil in your car. Plus you can get a 10% discount off all services if you have a maintenance contract with us. We also offer coil cleaning. The manufacturer of your system also suggests you clean the evaporator coil in your air conditioner every 5 years. Even though it can be costly to clean, it’s definitely less to clean it than to replace it. Your evaporator coil is the part of your air conditioning system that becomes cold when the unit is on. It’s connected to the duct work and air flows through the coil and the cold air is then distributed throughout your home. So you can see why it’s important to keep it clean and free of debris.  So give us a call here at Precision Heating & Air Conditioning to schedule all of your air conditioning/Heating maintenance and service needs! Have a great weekend and to all the wonderful dads in the Austin… Happy Father’s Day!
