As the temperature drops, are all of the members of your family staying warm?

With temperatures getting colder the closer we get to January, are you taking the proper steps to keep your pet warm? Though our pets have fur, most breeds are not made for the freezing temperatures of winter. Smaller breeds such as Chihuahuas, Miniature Pinchers, and Pugs as well as short haired dogs like Weimaraners, Grey Hounds, and Boxers do not do well in colder temperatures and need a little extra care in the winter months. Here are a few tips to get your furry best friends through the cooler months.

  • Small dogs or those with little to no hair should have sweaters or jackets for protection against the cold. Not all dogs are interested in being fabulously chic, so don’t make them! Keep them outside for minimal amounts of time.  If your dog will tolerate it, consider foot protection booties. This can keep your dog’s feet safe from harm, such as dangerous objects hidden by the snow or salt on roads and walk ways.
  • Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth.  Shaving a dog during the summer months relieves the heat, but when you shave your dog during the winter months, you rob them of their undercoat, which provides warmth and insulation.
  • Never leave your dog alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.
  • If your dog is in the cold and begins shaking or shivering more than normal, get them back inside the warm house. If you suspect your dog is developing hypothermia, take them to a vet immediately.
  • Avoid letting your dog eat snow or anything else on the ground. Eating snow can cause stomach upset and even hypothermia. Always keep fresh room temperature water available at all times.

Feeling a small chill in your home, but don’t feel like bumping the heat up? Cuddle with your furry friend! Dogs are companion animals and great for cuddling. I know my dog acts as a mini-furnace when he is curled up next me! Heater not quite getting the house warm enough? Give Precision Heating & Air Conditioning a call!  When you choose Precision Heating & Air Conditioning for your air conditioning and heating service and repair, you choose service you can trust 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no additional costs for after-hours work. Stay toasty, Austin!

Wow I Hope Your Heater Works! It's COLD!

Brrrrr, Austin! It’s cold outside! We are looking at a few days of chilly weather before it gets warmer. The days are chilly and the nights look like them might get below freezing. While you’re staying cozy and warm inside, you may want to think about how you’re going to protect your plumbing from the freezing temperatures. When temperatures dip below freezing for more than two hours, you’re looking at freezing and possibly bursting pipes within your home. Here are some tips to prevent that:

• Drip all the faucets in your home. Make sure to drip both hot and cold water.

• If your heat isn’t already on, turn it on and leave it at 55 degrees Fahrenheit minimum. Open all of your closet and a cupboard doors to expose plumbing fixtures so that the spaces will remain ventilated with warm air.

•  Disconnect garden hoses and, if possible, use an indoor valve to shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets. This reduces the chance of freezing in the short span of pipe just inside the house.

Supposedly, these freezing temperatures will be gone in a couple of days and we will be back to our nice warm Texas weather. In the event that it remains chilly, if you haven’t had a winter check on your furnace done, you should really consider one. Having your furnace checked annually keeps you and your family safe from dangers such a carbon monoxide and gas leaks. Need to have your furnace looked at? Give Precision Heating & Air Conditioning a call!  When you choose Precision Heating & Air Conditioning for your air conditioning and heating service and repair, you choose service you can trust 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no additional costs for after-hours work. Stay toasty, Austin!

WOW, Its going to be in the 50's Tomorrow!

Hello, Austin! Are you ready for the cold front that’s coming through this weekend? Is your furnace ready? Sixty four degrees doesn't sound like that low of a temperature, but when you've been sitting in the high nineties for the last six months, that’s practically below freezing! I know I’ll be bundled up!

If you plan on being outside make sure to take the proper steps to stay warm. Dressing in layers will protect you from the chilly wind. Wearing a long sleeve shirt over that tank top you normally wear will help build barriers between you and cold. It’s also important that you are wearing the proper footwear. I know those sandals and flip flops are very comfortable and convenient, but freezing your toes off just isn't worth it. Finally, you lose 90% of your body heat from your heat, so make sure you wear a hat! Covering up your ears will keep your entire body warmer than it would be without the extra protection.

When you are inside, you can keep warm simply by throwing on blanket and wearing those cozy flannel pajamas you love so much. Not quite cutting it? Before you turn on that furnace, you might want to think about have a fall maintenance check done. If your furnace hasn't been properly maintained over the years, you run the risk of exposing yourself and your loved ones to carbon monoxide. By having your furnace maintained yearly, you ensure that your family will be safe and have heat throughout the cold season.

Not had that yearly heating maintenance yet? Maybe you've already tried to turn on your heater and nothing happened. Sounds like you need some heating repair. Give Precision Heating & Air Conditioning a call! When you use Precision Heating & Air Conditioning for your air conditioning and heating service and repair, you choose service you can trust 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no additional costs for after-hours work.

Stay toasty, Austin!

Heating Problems

One Main Heating Problem

This time of year, a lot of our service calls seem to result in replacing a high limit switch.  So, what is a high limit switch, and why would it cause your furnace to stop heating your home? A high-limit switch is a key part of your heating system; it is designed to prevent your heater from overheating and burning up the motor. Any time airflow is restricted from passing over the heat exchanger; there is danger of the furnace overheating. There are several reasons that airflow could be restricted, a clogged filter is a common problem. The high limit switch works by shutting down the furnace at a set limit so it doesn’t continuously run and burn out the heating system.  Replacing a high limit switch is something we do often and our technicians are highly trained.  It does require dealing with electrical components, which can be extremely dangerous and is best left to a professional. This is one common issue for a heating failure that Precision Heating and Air conditioning can quickly replace and have you comfortably heating again in just one service call.  Should you find yourself cold this week; give Precision a call. We are a heating repair service company that you can trust, and know that you will only pay for the repair you need. We never charge after hours fees and we keep technicians on call 24/7/365 days a year. Call us anytime!

The New Heating Season Is Here Is Austin Texas

Precision Heating & Air Conditioning would like to wish you and your loved ones a happy and save New Years!  2011 was a great year for us and we wouldn’t be where we are now without your support!

Air Conditioning And Heating Filters

The New Year is a great reminder to change your filter.  Depending on your MERV rating filters should be changed frequently.  What is a MERV rating?  MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, basically the higher the MERV the more dust the filter will remove from the air. The ratings of the MERV filter are measured in microns and they range between MERV 1 and MERV 16.  Particles that are removed from different MERV filters include; dust, tobacco smoke, pet dander, bacteria, smog, mold spores, viruses, pollen, and wood.

Most household standard filters only have a MERV rating of 1 – 4 which is not a very good rating.  A rating of 5 – 8 are most commonly used in commercial applications, but are also a good choice for your home. Filters with a MERV rating of 9 – 12 are the best choice for homeowners.  But even better are the filters that have a MERV rating of 13 – 16 these filters are used in hospitals and clean rooms.

Stay Healthy In 2012 With A New AC Filter

When you purchase a filter it will say how often they recommend replacement, it is always a good idea to take a look at the filter before the suggested date of replacement. If you can see the dust on the filter it is time to change it. Not changing your filter can prevent airflow and even damage your equipment. Give Precision Heating & Air Conditioning a call to discuss filtration options for your home.  Keep your family happy and healthy for 2012!

Zoning Your AC And Heating System

How often do you feel warm, while your spouse or children are complaining that they are cold?  Cooling/Air Conditioning the whole house because you are baking in the kitchen just isn’t economical. Have you ever thought of zoning your home? This gives you the ability to keep different rooms at different temperatures.  If you have a room that gets more sun than the others, that room will need the Air Conditioning on longer than the others to cool to the requested set temperature.  It makes sense and it can save you money. Here is what Carrier has to offer.

Heating Repairs May Be Needed With The Upcoming Weather

It’s going to be another chilly weekend!  Although the hot Texas summer may still be fresh in your mind, it is time to start preparing your home for cold weather. Fall is the perfect time to start so you are prepared for the next cold front. There are several no-cost or low-cost improvements that can be made to your home to reduce winter bills.
To extend the life of your furnace replace your filters on a monthly basis. If you have pets, check the filters more often. Weatherproof your home by caulking between window/door frames and walls, weatherstrip between doors and frames, and add double paned windows or use plastic film kits to cover single-pane windows. Take advantage of natural sunlight! Open your window coverings during the day to allow the sun to help heat your house, and then close them at night to keep the warmth in.
According to the United States Department of Energy, 46% of the average utility bill goes to heating and cooling a home. They also estimate you can save around $180 per year in energy costs by following some of these ideas. Adjust the thermostat to the lowest comfortable temperature, and consider a programmable thermostat, which allows you to automatically set it to lower the heat while you are at work, and also at night while you sleep. If you are leaving for several days, choose an energy-saving temperature for the entire time the house is empty. In order to save on your energy bill they estimate that your heat should be lowered for a minimum of 8 hours at a time.
Other money saving tips that you can use year round are: turning off lights and electronics when not in use, using cold water for laundry, and only doing full loads in the dishwasher, clothing washer, and dryer. You can cut costs on heating your water by lowering the temperature setting – most families only need to keep it on medium or around 120 degrees.
If you are thinking about or need to replace a large appliance look for Energy Star qualified products. Energy-efficient appliances include high-efficiency furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, clothes dryers with moisture sensors, and clothes washers and dishwashers that save water
This winter keep warm, and save energy and money by following a few simple steps.

Have Your Heating System Checked Out!

•    Have your heating and cooling system checked seasonally, and clean or change the filters monthly. A dirty filter can result in increased energy use and equipment failure.
•    Check your home for air leaks. Fill gaps and cracks with caulk or insulation.
•    Open window coverings during the day, and close them during the night.
•    Use multiple layers of bedding and throws to stay warm without adjusting the thermostat.
•    Use area rugs on tile, wood, or laminate floors.
•    Install glass fireplace doors to reduce drafts and loss of heated air.
•    When you leave for work or for extended periods of time, turn the thermostat down.
•    Ask for energy star products when purchasing a furnace, heat pump, or programmable thermostat.
