Media filters provide homeowners with a better filtration system than standard pleated filters.  Pleated filters can become clogged quickly and need to be changed more often, media filters have more than one layer that traps particles, therefore it can more efficiently catch more and last longer.  The higher the MERV rating on a media filter the fewer dust particles and other airborne contaminants pass through the filter.  MERV ratings range from 1 – 16, common household filters usually range from MERV 1 – 6.  At a MERV rating of 8 a filter can start to catch things as small as mold spores.  MERV ratings above 10 are not generally used in residential applications, but a MERV rating of 16 can catch human sneezes particles, bacteria, and tobacco smoke.
